A few months ago my niece came to live with me and before she got here I needed to make some changes to what would be her new room.  You see the room that she would be in was a guest room and it was far to “old” for her.  I don’t have children yet and I really wasn’t sure what I could do with this very bland room to make it comfortable for her and make her feel more like it was hers.  She wasn’t coming from the best situation and she hadn’t had her own room for years (she had been sharing her room with her Mom in a hotel).  In fact I didn’t even know what her favorite colors were and I didn’t have time to do a whole lot but I had to do something.

I got online and started looking for different ideas for an eleven year old girls bed room and one thing really seemed to shine through over and over again.  Nearly every bed room that I saw had purple sheets on the bed and a fun and colorful comforter with purple throw pillows.  So I decided that the purple sheets would be the basis for the rest of the room and that everything would need to have the same shade of purple in it.  I ordered three sets of the purple sheets to make sure that she always had a clean set and a few other purple accessories that were the same brand and same shade as the purple sheets.

Once I got the purple sheets in the mail I took one of the pillow cases into a hardware store and had a can of pain made to match the purple sheets and then I went shopping for other accessories for her new room.  I got a great and colorful comforter to go on the bed that had the color of the purple sheets in it, and a pair of slippers and robe in the same color and many other accessories that either had that same shade of purple in them or that went really well with the purple sheets.  I got every thing home and added some purple pin stripes to the walls and painted her name on the front of her door and put the new bedding on the bed.  It really started to look like a little girls room and I loved it!  But I was nervous about what she would think when saw it.

A few days later I went to pick her up at the air port.  She seemed to be very scared and very nervous and was nearly silent the whole ride home.  Even though she was my niece I hadn’t gotten to see her since she was about seven or so.  I brought her in the house and carried her one tote bag down the hall way and stood to the side of her door.  She got a big smile on her face when she saw her name painted in purple.  Then she opened the door and she started crying.  I though I had blown it and she hated it.  So I set her bag down and told her to get unpacked and that we would have pizza and movies for dinner.  An hour or so later I poked my head in her room to see how she was doing.  She was in her bed and wearing both her new slippers and robe and I asked her if everything was ok.  She said that the room was great and that purple was her favorite color and that her favorite part of the room was her new purple sheets!
